John George William Oliver
John George William Oliver

John George William Oliver was born in Sydney, New South Wales, 29 Oct 1852, to John Oliver and Jane Ann Richards. He died 31 March 1889 in Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

He married Sarah Wood (or Woods) at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Forest Lodge, Sydney, New South Wales, on 23 July 1879.

They had four children. They were Alice May (b. 1881), Arthur (b. 1883), Felix H (b. 1885), James (b. 1888). Sarah had another child, Eva Williams (b. 1894).

Eva's birth certificate gives her as illegitimate. Also her name as Eva Williams. As no father is listed, and mother as Sarah Oliver, the second name, Williams, makes me wonder if the father's name was Williams, as it is not a normal name for a female.

Felix Henry Oliver (1885) died 1903, Petersham, NSW, Australia, aged 8.

When married, John was listed as a seaman, but must have left the sea, as he is shown thereafter as a slater and labourer.

More of an insight into John G W Oliver can be seen in the story of son, Arthur. Certainly the picture seems to balance with that told of him by Arthur.
