John George William Oliver:
John was listed as a seaman when married. Was listed as a slater when son Arthur was born.

11. Margaret Jane West, born about 1859 in Lachlan, New South Wales, Australia; died 6 May 1917 in Boorowa, New South Wales, Australia.

  Notes for James McGrath:
James was a wheelwright. Married at Cowra NSW. Lived at Boorowa when Catherine (Kate) was born. James shown as 97 when he died. This makes dates conflicting, as he is shown as 40 when Catherine was born in 1887 (this has to be an error).
James was married three times: to Kate Costello, about 1943 in Ireland (Clonoulty), (seven children); Catherine Cain, 1866 at Yass (4 children, one deceased not identified); Margaret Jane West, 1887 at Cowra (7 children, the first of which may not have been James', as it does not carry his name as father). It is believed Margaret went to housekeep for James after the death of his second wife. More checking is probably needed to ascertain the correct year of this third marriage, as on Catherine's birth registration the marriage year is given as 1882.
Margaret Jane West was born in Tambaroora, in the Lachlan area of NSW, 1859.
Shipping records show James' age as 27 in 1853 (possible but doubtful) and Catherine as 30. John McGrath paid for all these fares, but is not listed as coming on the same ship which indicates he was already here.
From the shipping list it appears William was born just prior to coming to Australia and I believe Thomas may have been born in Sydney before James and Kate went to the Boorowa district, also, perhaps, another child named Margaret.

Registry records show Michael and Francis were born at Binalong, but I have found no registration for Joseph or Maurice; nor for Agnes. - I have not pursued any of these at this time and the information I have comes partly from Fr Brian Maher in Canberra, and guesswork from NSW BDM records.

Later, in 1877, he acquired 673 acres near the Hallsville school, running towards the Peel River. This property he called "Burnhead" after the town in Scotland, and here built the family home. After his death, "Burnhead" was sold to Mr Hope Fielder, who renamed it "Meldorn".

Generation No. 5

16. John Oliver. Born 1823 in Fowey, Cornwall, UK; died aboard a French warship off New Caledonia 19 February 1859 and was buried on Casy Island, New Caledonia (his intriguing story can be read here.) He married 17. Jane Ann Richards 28 August 1850 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

17. Jane Ann Richards. Jane was born 11 November 1832 in Phillack, Cornwall, England; and died 3 April 1904 in Marrickville, NSW, Australia. She was the daughter of John Richards and Jane Mitchell .
  Notes for Jane Ann Richards:
Jane Ann Richards arrived in Australia, along with her family, on the "Julindur" in 1849. After the death of John Jane married Donald Lamont and they had a daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Lamont born 5 June 1869.

Children of John Oliver and Jane Richards is:

8 i. John George William Oliver, born 29 October 1852 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; married Sarah Woods 23 July 1879 in St James Church, Forest Lodge, New South Wales, Australia.
ii. William Benjamin Felix Oliver, born 1856 in New Caledonia; married Louisa Connolly 15 December 1877 in St Silas Church, Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia.

Notes on William B F Oliver:
William was the first white child born in New Caledonia.

iii. Louis Charles Oliver, born 14 October 1857 in Glebe, New South Wales, Australia; died 17 June 1915 in Cronulla, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
    Notes for Louis Charles Oliver:
Louis is listed as a Slater. Cause of death, "haemorrhage from wound to throat - self-inflicted." (A polite way of saying suicide.) He is listed as "Not Married". Suicide may be the reason we were never informed of him, as, being staunch Catholics, suicide was considered a mortal sin - unforgivable.
Louis' birth certificate lists his father, John Oliver, as a Pilot.
His birth certificate also shows the Previous issue as 2 boys living and the informant as mother. I have not been able to find a third child registered in NSW. It is possible he was born at sea, or more likely in New Caledonia, which would account for the lack of registration here.
The informant on Louis' death certificate was Lilian Hawkins, cousin, 11 Rosebery St, Mosman, Sydney. A Lilian RICHARDS married William Hawkins at St Leonards, Sydney, in 1895. Lillian is the daugher of Benjamin Richards, brother of Jane Ann.
Louis was buried 18 June 1915 at Gore Hill, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

18. James Woods, born about 1821 in London, England. He married 19. Catherine Haley, 5 June 1848 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

19. Catherine Haley, born about 1821 in Ireland.

James Woods is listed as labourer.
I have not yet confirmed all these children other than Sarah, but all have been christened at St James Roman Catholic Church, Forest Lodge. Sarah married John George William Oliver, 23 July 1879, at St James RC, Forest lodge, Sydney. They are all registered with the name "Wood", as is Sarah, rather than "Woods". The eldest girl, Elizabeth, married John Swarbrick 1871 in Sydney. John and Elizabeth Swarbrick must have been close to Sarah and John G W Oliver as they appear as witnesses on the marriage certificate of John G W Oliver, and "John Swarbrick, brother-in-law" appears on John G W Oliver's death certificate.
The Swarbricks apparently all moved to Western Australia around 1900. I have talked with one of the descendants here in Western Australia but not gained any more information.
  Notes for Catherine Haley:
Catherine's name appears on certificates as Haly, Healy and Haley. Parents' names are not shown. Also on Sarah's birth certificate it gives the Previous Issue as 4 boys, 4 girls living, and the informant as mother. I have only been able to find 7, including Sarah. It also gives James and Catherine's wedding date as 6 June 1844, but this does not fit with any of the other information I have as well as their registered marriage date.

Children of James Woods and Catherine Haley (or Healy) are:

  i. Elizabeth Wood, born 1849 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; married John Swarbrick 1871 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
ii. John W. Wood, born 1851 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

25. Mary Bennie.

Notes: There are three different dates given in the records for Alexander Sneddon and Mary Bennie. Two are only weeks apart.
