Catherine [Kate] Oliver

Catherine (Kate) McGrath was born 4 July 1887 at Boorowa, New South Wales, the fourth child of James McGrath and Margaret Jane West. She died in Tamworth, New South Wales, on 23 February 1962.

Catherine married Arthur Oliver (b. 1883) in 1906 at Waverley, Sydney, New South Wales. They had 5 children, Arthur James (b. 1908), Gordon (b. 1912), Catherine Mazel (b. 1914), Eva Joyce (b. 1916), and Lewis (b. 1920).

Little is known of her early life, and so far research has not uncovered a great deal.

She was the fourth child of James McGrath and Margaret Jane West. The others were: Elizabeth May (b. abt 1876), Agnes (b. 1881), Ada (b. 1885), Henry (b. 1889), Jessie (b. 1892), and James (b. 1895).

Margaret was James’ third wife, and it is believed that she may have worked for him looking after his three young sons from his previous marriage before marrying him, according to New South Wales BDM records, in 1882. Whether this indicates that Elizabeth and Agnes may not have been his children, but Margaret’s from a previous relationship, is pure conjecture.
